What is your approach to drum recording?

"For me, the basis is what kind of music the band plays and what they want to achieve. It's best to discuss this well in advance to choose the right drumheads and drum kit. Often, the drummer is stubborn about playing on their own kit. I don't try to fight it, but I make it clear what it entails. For example, I make them aware that if they bring a piccolo snare drum, we won't get a deep, fat sound. Once we're in the studio, the key is to tune the drums properly. I have no idea how to do that, so I always have someone else, someone I trust, do it. When it comes to microphones, I'm not very picky. I think I mostly use standard microphones that simply get the job done. The sound of the room is very important to me, and I aim to capture interesting and useful room tones. I really like a lot of natural reverb."

Which engineers have inspired you?

"Certainly, the first person who got me interested in recording was Steve Albini. His albums always had that distinctive, roomy sound. What was missing in Albini's sound, Terry Date and Kurt Ballou filled in for me. I really like that element of the "atomic," more compressed sound. Kurt adds an element of "controlled chaos," and Terry Date's productions have a fantastic attack."

How did the idea for a drum sample pack come around?

"Most of my projects involve mixing recordings that were done by someone else. Often, due to budget constraints, these recordings are done in a less impressive way, and frequently, there are no room mics or they are unusable. For a long time, I've been collecting samples during my sessions, and then I use them in mixing other records. Unfortunately, during album recordings, there isn't much time for recording additional samples. So, I decided to do it properly, and that's how the idea for a sample library came about."

Who should use these drum samples?

"I recorded samples that I want to use myself. Implicitly, these are for people facing similar challenges to mine. Bands preparing for recordings can also benefit from these samples as they can experiment with different sounds. Lastly, there are bands that record their albums on their own, and with this library, they can greatly enhance their final sound.

In addition, I would like to encourage everyone to try to get as much as possible from live recordings, using my samples as a supplement rather than a complete replacement for recorded drums. Use them creatively."
